Artful:

Art and Dementia is an arts program that’s full of hope and creativity for people living with dementia and their carers. Hosted at the Frankston Arts Centre, Artful offers a supportive, engaging environment where participants can connect, explore their creativity, and foster a sense of autonomy. Designed in response to the growing need for inclusive, community-based programs, Artful demonstrates how the arts can bring joy and meaning to everyday life.

What Is the Artful Program?

Artful is a thoughtfully curated six-week program specifically designed for people living with dementia and their carers. Each weekly session spans two hours and includes:

  • Art Exploration: Guided tours through the CUBE 37 gallery space

  • Creative Workshops: Hands-on art-making activities facilitated by a trained artist educator.

  • Social Connection: A shared morning tea to foster community and connection.

This program isn’t just about art; it’s about creating moments of joy, building relationships, and providing a safe space for expression.

The Origins of Artful

The Artful: Art and Dementia program was initially developed and launched in 2016 by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney, in collaboration with The Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney and Dementia Australia. Frankston Arts Centre adopted this groundbreaking initiative in 2022 to address the unique challenges faced by people living with dementia at home.

Supported by local organisations like the Lions Club of Frankston and funding from Creative Australia, Artful has grown to become an essential resource for those at risk of isolation. Its mission is clear: to use art as a medium to enhance quality of life and foster meaningful connections.

Why Art for Dementia?

Art therapy has long been recognised for its ability to support mental and emotional well-being. For people living with dementia, engaging with art can:

  • Boost Memory and Cognition: Creating and discussing art stimulates the brain, helping participants recall experiences and emotions.

  • Encourage Expression: Art provides an outlet for self-expression, especially for those who may struggle with verbal communication.

  • Foster Social Connections: Group art activities build camaraderie among participants and their carers, reducing feelings of isolation.

Artful embraces these benefits, offering a structured yet flexible approach that resonates deeply with its participants.

Heartfelt Feedback from Participants

The impact of the Artful program is evident in the heartfelt testimonials of those who have attended.

One participant shared:

“The people who arranged this event and who were running the program were so warm and welcoming. It’s tricky entering places with someone with dementia, but everyone was so inviting and warm. I hope this continues as it is a fabulous event.”

Another attendee reflected on rediscovering their passion for art:

“I have never done art since leaving school, but now I want to do it more.”

These stories highlight the program’s ability to reignite creativity and bring a renewed sense of purpose to participants’ lives.

Community Support

Artful’s success is rooted in the strong community partnerships that have enabled its growth. Financial backing from organisations like the Lions Club of Frankston and grants from Creative Australia have provided the resources needed to expand the program’s reach and frequency. This collaboration between artists, carers, and community groups shows how local support can drive meaningful change.

Artful’s Impact on Carers

Carers play an invaluable role in the lives of those with dementia, often shouldering emotional and physical challenges. Artful recognises this and creates a space where carers can relax, bond with their loved ones, and engage in creative activities.

For carers, the program offers:

  • Respite and Renewal: A chance to step away from daily responsibilities and focus on shared experiences.

  • Skill-Building: Hands-on workshops provide new tools for incorporating creativity into caregiving routines.

  • Community Connection: Opportunities to meet and connect with others who share similar experiences.

Artful empowers carers to see their loved ones thrive, even in the face of dementia, and provides them with valuable support in their caregiving journey.
