Creative Learning in Healthcare

Visual Art Classes for Dialysis Patients at Frankston Hospital

As part of our commitment to fostering creativity and community wellbeing, Frankston Arts Centre proudly supports an inspiring creative learning program in partnership with Peninsula Health. This unique initiative brings visual art education directly into the dialysis ward at Peninsula Health’s Frankston Campus, enriching the hospital experience for patients undergoing treatment.

A Therapeutic Approach to Visual Arts

Patients participate in guided art classes led by a professional arts therapist. These sessions include discussions about well-known artworks, learning drawing and painting techniques, experimenting with colour, and creating with recycled materials. The program is designed to be accessible to all skill levels, encouraging self-expression, creativity, and connection.

Benefits of Creative Learning in Hospitals

Programs like this highlight the benefits of creative learning and demonstrate how visual arts education programs can positively impact mental health and wellbeing.

Key benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Improved focus and motor skills

  • A sense of achievement and purpose

  • Social connection through shared creative activity

This initiative reflects the broader benefits of art in healthcare settings, and how education-based art programs can support healing and emotional wellbeing in meaningful ways.
