On the first Thursday of every month, just before or after sunset, depending on the season, something wonderful happens in the Community Room at Frankston Library. A small group of writers called the Frankston Writers’ Salon meet to craft new work together in an intimate, inclusive, supportive space.

The Salon was conceived and established in 2023 by poet and local writer, Andrea Louise Thomas. She wanted to create a safe space for writers of all ages and experience levels to write in a unique collective way and share with each other what they had just written.

Before each Salon, Andrea sends an open-ended prompt for the writers to think about. They write to her prompt when they meet. Because the Salon only meets for an hour, the writers must focus quickly which produces surprisingly fine writing because the writers go straight into that delightful ‘flow state’. On alternating months they write either short form poetry or microfiction.

Spanning ages from 15 to 85, this group of men and women from all walks of life are a comfortable little community, yet when new members arrive, they are quickly welcomed. "Nothing quite compares to the energy of an in-person meeting of the minds. I feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon the Frankston Writers’ Salon,” says member, Sam.

At the heart of any good creation is both inspiration and bravery. “Going to the Writers Salon has inspired the group and helped us grow as writers, making us more confident to keep writing and to trust in our talent,” says member Crystal. Seeing other writers blossom has been exciting for the whole group as their stories and poetry surprise and delight each other.

It can be intimidating to join a new group. “I was very nervous going to the first Salon. I am a quadriplegic and I did not know how accepted I would be. I was soon put at ease by Andrea’s welcoming voice leading the group. With my support worker’s assistance, I could write away!” says member Kerrie.

This year, the Salon members have been quietly working away getting ready for their first public performance. As part of this year’s Southside Festival, the writers will present a Writers Showcase at Frankston Library on May 17 at 1pm. Featuring performance poetry, recited poetry and microfiction readings written in the Salon, all the writers’ pieces centre on some aspect of Frankston City in some quite unexpected ways.

Don’t miss the chance to see local literary talent shine. Hear the Salon members deliver their work with heart, passion and sometimes hilarious humour offering a writer’s perspective on the many virtues and interesting quirks of this unique city of the arts.
