HATCH Workshops - Top financial tips for creatives

Learning how to weather the ups and downs of creative income can be a wild ride for emerging artists. Whoever learned the basics of business, money and financial literacy during their arts training?

We are thrilled to have Monica Davidson from Creative Plus Business present our upcoming HATCH Workshop: Money Is Not A Dirty Word.

Monica was named as one of the Australian Financial Review’s 100 Women of Influence for her work in the creative industries. In 2019 she received the inaugural Creative Trailblazer Award at Creative 3, a national award from QUT Creative Enterprise Australia that celebrates “an individual who creates enterprises and opportunities and who advocates, mentors, donates, educates and advises within Australia’s creative economy”.

As a business advisor and award-winning creative industries expert, Monica began her career as a writer and filmmaker who learned how to run a successful creative business on the fly and now shares that knowledge with others.

An expert in injecting the often-boring topic of business with sass, creative flair, and laughs galore to make the learning process easier for creative brains, Monica has put together her Top Financial Tips for emerging artists and arts organisations:

1. Prepare for the 'famine and the feast' - and irregular income is normal for creative practitioners. At first it might be a little scary, but it can be managed once you know how!

2. Don't just sort out your financial past (for example, getting your taxes up to date); learn how to look into the future as well. A cash flow projection might just be a good guess, but it can help to reduce your financial anxiety considerably.

3. Get your head around your budgets. It's a steep learning curve, but once you're at the top of that mountain your financial life becomes a lot easier to manage.
