The Royal Australian Navy Band Melbourne
The Royal Australian Navy Band Melbourne is based at HMAS CERBERUS, Victoria. The Band is under the direction of Lieutenant Andrew Stokes, RAN, and is one of two bands of professional full time musicians stationed at naval establishments. The second band is based at HMAS KUTTABUL, New South Wales. Another four bands consisting of reverse part time musicians stationed across Australia are located in Queensland, Tasmanian, South Australia and Western Australia.
The Royal Australian Navy Band is one of Australia's premier military ensembles. Its history can be linked to the various bands of Colonial Naval Forces, which were in existence prior to Federation, and to the Commonwealth Naval Force which was established in 1901. Throughout its history, the band has performed for thousands of audiences within Australia and around the world. Today, we continue a proud tradition of providing ceremonial, musicals and public relations support for the Royal Australian Navy.
To fulfil its mission, the band incorporates a fleet of ensembles. All members perform in the ceremonial ensemble and concert band. to ensure versatility, the band maintains other capabilities including big band, rock band, jazz and chamber ensembles.
When performing in concert the variety of music covered by the band includes marching and traditional repertoire, music from the swing era, chamber music, vocal presentations and music with a modern beat. In a word, the band is versatile.
